The storms roll in as i trek the journey to Summit Valley. My mutation, my sixth sense, tingles as the rain falls upon me. It doesn’t seem to like the rain, the growth on my shoulder recoiling, hardening to protect the inner flesh.i’m still uncomfortable with it, but it has proven itself helpful. I cautiously advance over a hill, the lights of civilization shining in the dark sky. A warm feeling forms in my stomach at the sight of the town. Home sweet home.
I start down the hill, nearly slipping on the mud multiple times but each time regaining a grip. I near the main street of the town, a mere dirt road with a few wooden buildings set up as shops and merchants. Wooden walls line the full encampment, reinforced using any and all metal the few engineers here can find. Two of my colleagues stand guard at the entrance (which is marked by a wooden sign), wearing dark ponchos and holding rifles. Despite the safe and all welcome feel of this town, we still have need of a militia of some sort. Raiders are common and there is a low tolerance of them here.
“Evening, Rick,” one of the guards says to me, nodding to me.
“Great weather, eh?” I joke, nearing them and stopping under the canopy set up.
“Yeah, sure,” a eel faced man says to me. “Real beautiful.”
I nod. “Now, I’m going to get a whiskey and sleep. Farewell fellas,” i say, and start inside, the others wishing me a great rest.
I walk into one of the structures, a small building with posts for horses set up. A golden light shines through a set of windows. I walk up to the swinging doors and push them open. I think one of the architects here must of been a old Western fan, as the architecture and design of Summit Valley seems to be very much western themed.
I sit down on a stool and nod a greeting to Jerry the bartender.
“Evenin’, Jerry,” i say, taking off my black cap.
Jerry walks over, dressed in a plain white tunic and brown pants, his hair cut short and his eyes are bulging, a result of the bombs.
“Evening, Rick, what can i get ya?” Jerry asks, looking at me.
“i’ll take a glass of whiskey.”
Jerry quickly grabs a glass and fills it with whiskey, and hands it to me. I toss him a few coins, and he grins.
“How was the journey?” He asks kindly.
I shake my head. “Long. Encountered some USRC, but shook them off near the city. Found a new supply depot.” I say, with a slight smile at the end. We’ve been desperate for fuel and weapons for a while, as we’ve used a lot of ammo prematurely and have had problems with raiders. I drink the whiskey, the warm liquid warming me up, and i shake my head in response to the strong alcohol.
Jerry nods. “Well thats one good thing. Go get some rest, Rick, you’ve been out a while.”
I nod, stand and tip a coin, and leave the bar, heading towards the military esque dormitories set up.
I enter my dormitory, dormitory B, and find my bed. I take off the gear from my journey, and lie down on the cot. I’ve heard tell of the bosses planning to loot a trailer park and using those as housing for a while. I doze off, exhaustion quickly sweeping me into the realm of sleep.
