Minutes had passed in near silence. The occasional scuffle of a careless step was all that could be heard. The ODST was still standing next to his warthog silently, waiting for a report. His combat technician signed the all-clear; the outpost was empty. She walked toward the ODST, aimlessly kicking a rock in her path.
"There's nothing here that we've found. We checked the comms station and barracks tent. No blood, no bodies. The only thing left to check is the storage facility."
And as if on queue, a shrill screech of metal struck their ears. The ODST looked over his shoulder as panic overtook his chest. Horrifying screams echoed through the valley. It was the beginning of the end.
