“When I awoke, the first thing I noticed was a sharp, throbbing headache from my encounter with whoever was outside of Patriotsburg. I was propped up against a desk in an office, unbound and free to move around. I looked around the room without standing. Out of a lone window I saw the sun rising above the tree line of a great forest. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a man sitting at the desk. He noticed that I was awake and said, ‘So you’re awake. I apologize for the harshness of my guards. We are working through with a bit of a situation and they mistook you for some of the radicals who caused it. I’m Chief of Police Cartier.”
I rose to my feet and he gestured toward a chair. I walked a few steps toward it and sat down. I noticed some familiar papers on his desk.
‘We had to search your belongings to guarantee that you weren’t one the radicals,’ Cartier said as he pushed my identification towards me. I put the papers away, slightly irritated, but understanding. He continued, ‘So, Srgt, what brought you here in the middle of the night?’
‘The military no longer employs people like me,’ I responded.
‘Ahhh, yes. That’s what your friend said. I finished investigating him already. He also told me that you were on your way to Texas. Unfortunately we no vehicles to spare. The radicals sabotaged the ones that they couldn’t take,’ he stated.
I sighed and said, ‘Who are these “radicals” anyway?”
‘They’re just brigands. They invaded the town hall and the surrounding area. They want an absurd amount of money as ransom,’ Cartier remarked casually.
‘Some band of brigands!’ I scoffed, ‘Are you going to pay the ransom or what?’
‘That’s not necessary information for you to have,’ he responded, ‘You can have a meal, a map, and your weapons back for any inconvenience we’ve caused. The mess hall is that way. Your friend is already there.’
I stood at attention and saluted, then walked to the mess hall.
As I walked out, he called out to me, ‘I’d stay away from the town hall tonight!’
I wondered what that was supposed to mean.”
