Decided to repaint the classic Master Chief because I really like the Halo CE look.
I'm a bit ambivalent about the Halo Infinite Master Chief armour. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I wish they had gone back to the classic Halo CE look.
These are the paints I used. (Summary: Vallejo Model Colour thinned down with Citadel’s Lahmian medium’ applied in multiple thin layers.)
1. Primer Layer: AMMO Mig brand One Shot Grey Primer <-- this is a very smooth, paint-on primer that my FLGS recommended to me.
- I prefer brush-on primer because I find it easier to control than spray-on primer, which I am not skilled at using.
2. Base Coat: (a) Golden Olive (Vallejo) mixed with (b) Lahmian Medium (Citadel )
-When I thinned paints using water alone, I could not get a smooth finish. Thus, I used Lahmian medium instead of water. This thinned the paint down (1 part Golden Olive, 1 part Lahmian Medium) and also made it very smooth in application.
-A trade-off to thinning my paint down is that I had to apply this coat three times to get even and solid coverage over the primer layer. Another trade-off is thin coats of paint rub off with rough handling (e.g. when posing the minifigure). <-- My solution to this will be to give it a few coats of varnish to protect the paint. I've yet to do this, though.
3. Wash/Shade Layer: (a) Athonian Camoshade (a Citadel wash) mixed with (b) Lahmian Medium (Citadel)
- I didn't want the wash to be too stark/contrasting against the base coat. Thus, I mixed it with Lahmian medium to thin it--2 parts Athonian Camoshade, 1 part Lahmian medium. I applied 3 thin layers of this
