Today we're looking at the set Covenant Spectre Ambush 97110 from 2013 which includes one vehicle, 3 figures each with one weapon, and a small scenery build.
The spectre, cast in a nice crimson, seats four figures just like in Halo 2. One pilot, one gunner, and two passengers on either side which are provided convenient handles to keep the figures from falling off.
Figures include one marine in Halo 3 colors with a SOCOM pistol, one elite commando in white with a plasma rifle, and one elite honor guard in white with a focus rifle, which until very recently was the only one to ever exist. The weapons are all left unpainted.
The scenery build is simple but effective. It's composed of a baseplate and an assortment of standard bricks of varying sizes arranged to look like rubble to give the marine some cover. You also get one small sandbag which was also used in the old command ops line if anyone here remembers that. To help even the odds, the marine is given a missile pod which includes a mount and two L shaped pegs for easy carrying. I should note that I'm missing one 2X4 brick and one 1X1 brick from the original set and had to supplement them for this post.
Overall a pretty good set, though I might be a little biased since the spectre is one of my favorite vehicles. It looks good on a shelf and it gave kids a nice scenario to play with right out of the box. The turret looks a little basic and is probably the only thing about it I don't like much. The figures are cool, a nice painted marine and an awesome unique honor guard make nice additions to any collection. As an added bonus the spectre can accommodate modern figures and still looks pretty good. I'd love to see this set get remade one day.
