You never know where inspiration is going to come from. Saw an auction on shopgoodwill for a a partial Star Trek Enterprise set that was clearly missing the nacelle supports. This is likely why I was able to get it for only $21, but what attracted me more was the thought, “there’s enough there for a Kelvin build!” Sure enough, after lots of tinkering and structural redesign, I was able to put together what a TOS U.S.S. Kelvin might look like…it’s very similar to what others have imagined such a ship would look like. Had to do some improvising, as the ends of both nacelles were missing and the rear of the engineering hull had to be rebuilt from spare nacelle pieces, but I like how it turned out overall. Used some clear labels to create new lettering, and with the lower center of gravity was able to put together a much smaller stand that does not require a “fin” sticking out of the bottom - the panels at the front of the nacelle lock it securely into place. The opening scene of the Star Trek reboot is my favorite part of that movie, and I have been intrigued by the design of the Kelvin ever since…glad this auction gave me a chance to create a Mega version of it.
