Episode four
Tunnels under CTD checkpoint Rose's Cantina
Contra ran up to catch the cowboys.
“What's your guys' story?” he asked. Robert turned his head 45-degrees towards Contra.
“I'd rather not talk about it,” Robert said.
“Well then could you'd tell me why your here and why you decided to help me on that train?”
“Robert and I have been friends for a long time,” Marty started. “He's been down a dark path-”
“Marty,” Robert growled.
“I got this mate.”
“As I said, Robert has some stuff he'd rather not divulge. I was lost and lonely. We both were found by the same man. He helped us get back on our feet and showed us how to fight. You'd be surprised the things I've learned from him.
“I doubt it,” Contra said. “I think I know who you're talking about.”
“Well, that'd be somethin'. Anyway,” Marty continued.
“Howdy Sarge,” Contra said to someone walking by.
“What's up Kaput!” Sarge said, and kept on his way.
“Kaput?” Robert asked.
“It's an inside joke. I knew that guy on this one chat for local gamers, and once the bombs fell, we lost contact. Turns out, he joined the CDT and as I was having lunch I heard him talking about the chat. So when met, and been friends since.” Contra explained.
“Kaput?” Robert repeated with a grin.
Contra smirked and lowered his head. “Kaput was my chat name. It was randomly picked and I had one free change, so I waited until I came up with a name that I liked. The name kinda grew on me.”
Marty cleared his throat. “May I continue?” Both men nodded. “So our mentor trained us and helped us. Two months ago, he asked to find someone he lost contact with when the bombs fell. We owed him for saving us. And here we are.”
They turned a corner into another tunnel
“Do you by chance know the name of whom your looking for?” Contra asked.
“Ferrin C. That's all he told us.”
“Ferrin? C.?”
“Yes. Why, do you know him?”
“Yeah. I do.”
Running footsteps could be heard from behind them.
“Contra! Mr. Robbins, Mr. Barstow!” It was one of the dock men. “Sandman sent me. The outpost is under attack and everyone is evacuating!”
“If we evacuate, we'll lose the checkpoint,” Contra said.
“Sandman believes we can take it back anytime we want. We just need to get everybody out. The USRC sent Spec ops to take the place.”
“Great,” Contra muttered. He turned to the cowboys. “There's a fork in this tunnel 24 yards ahead. If we take the left, that will lead us to New Paso. I have a friend there that can help us get out of the city.”
“Um... Contra?” the dock man asked. “Sandman wants you on the train. He said we're gonna need all the agents we can get if we're to make it out of here alive.”
“Have the USRC not come yet?” Marty wondered aloud.
“The spotter saw them half a mile away. Their closing in fast.”
“Alright.” Contra started jogging back the way they had come. “You guys take the left fork! I'll meet you at the Slurp-n-Burp in New Paso!”
Marty and Robert looked at each other and grinned. “We're coming with you Contra!” Marty yelled after him.
“Then come on!”
