After the makeshift slipspace bomb was damaged by covenant attackers, ruining it's automatic countdown. Jorge decided to sacrifice himself to destroy the super carrier, and tossed noble 6 back down to Reach before doing so.

Well thats right but he sacrificed himself which was pointless because it later collapsed right on the city which calapsed many casualties but it was their plan anyway to invade reach

He sacrificed himself for what he thought, would be saving Reach. In doing so, he destroyed a super carrier, only for a massive covenant fleet to turn up later.
