While most models go through several versions before they’re approved for production (as seen with the forklift), the main build representing the factory interior came together quickly and saw only minor revision. To help our concept artist draw the sketches that were used for the fan vote, lead designer Kevin built the structure in a rush, and that original build proved so accurate that only minor tweaks were needed afterwards. Version 2 is what you see here, and this is more or less what will go into production. (These aren’t the real colors and there could be other small variations.)
It was important that the set’s structure accurately represent the Halo 3 level it draws from. The design team packed in as many details as possible. Catwalks, flood lights, stairwells, shipping containers, Traxus branding, so many printed pieces and the iconic bridge – it’s all in here, and it’s instantly recognizable.
To give the structure more depth, and to make the set more toyetic, the team added a “ceiling” in the form of a working crane. The crane is a new creation (it does not appear in-game) and was only added in v2, to offer more dynamic play options. It hangs over the set to complement the structure and is operated by a winch; it can crank up and down or slide side to side. The crane can be used to pick up move the included container.
The color palette will tie back to our older Flood sets, so long-time collectors will be able to display them together. To offer even more display options, the set was designed in a modular way. Although shown here in the “official” configuration, the instructions will suggest a few alternate ways to assemble the set. And what happens if you buy multiple copies and combine them? You’ll have to tell us!
There are even more goodies packed in the Traxus Factory Flood’s main build, but we don’t want to spoil it all. Let us know what you think in the comments below. Next time, we look at the figures that come with the set!
