"Mongoose Quad Trailer". Did you see what I did there? The trailer carries four Mongoose ULATVs. A slang term for a ULATV is… Wait for it… A QUAD! Get it? I know, bad joke right?
So if you ever wondered what would happen when an ONI skunk works engineering team was tasked with creating a trailer for the Mongoose ULATV? Well this crazy complicated beauty pictured before you is the answer! Another build from years ago that I hadn’t got around to posting on the MCX Gallery. Despite its age I’m still proud of this build. It articulates in a bunch of innovative ways and is so much more compact and interesting than a simple flatbed trailer.
As the pics suggest, the 4 wheels and the big grey ramps are connected to the rest of the trailer via an additional axle. Besides articulating to allow the trailer wheels to negotiate bumpy terrain (Pic 3), when the trailer is unhitched this feature also facilitates loading or unloading. The unhitched trailer is tilted back towards the grey ramps bringing the Mongoose mounts into proper alignment for loading or unloading (Pic 4). Once two ULATVs have been loaded and secured or visa versa, the trailer is tilted back to level, the turntable is unlocked by folding the hinged tail light out of the way, and the rack is rotated (Pic 5). When the opposite side now aligns with the grey ramps, the trailer is tilted again and now this side is loaded or unloaded (Pic 6). If you look closely at the empty trailer in pic 2, you’ll spot a pair of hoist loops up top which facilitate airlifting the trailer beneath a Pelican or Falcon with or without its compliment of Mongoose ULATVs. What do ya think?
