‘’As we continued down the road, my pulse began to settle and I slowed my pace a little. I turned around and saw Brendon struggling to keep up. I paused, shaking our last canteen of water; it seemed half empty. Brendon caught up, and I resumed my pacing, on towards a distant town 20 miles down the road.
I looked down the road and in the distance I saw a car parked on the shoulder, the headlights off, the driver’s door open. I pointed it out to Brendon and called it a derelict wreck, but he ran ahead to check it out.
As he approached the vehicle, Brendon suddenly slowed down, and I reached him.
Turning back to me, he scowled, ‘Smell that?’
‘No,’ I chuckled, ‘I can’t actually, I’ve got specific anosmia, can’t smell certain...’
I saw the source of the stench. The corpse of a man lay propped up against a tree.
I pointed it out to Brendon, and we rushed over to investigate.”
